Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 9/2021 (preliminary)

  • By the end of third quarter of the year the exports value of forest industry products totalled in real terms EUR 10.00 billion and increased from same period previous year by 15% (deflated using wholesale price index). The exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 1.18 billion in September 2021.
  • The exports value of wood-products industries was EUR 2.84 billion in January-September and increased by 42% in real terms compared to the same period previous year. The exports value of sawn goods increased by 56% and volume 11%. The exports price of sawn goods continued to increase and was EUR 411 per cubic meter in September 2021. For plywood the exports value increased by 17% and volume by a fifth.
  • In the same period, the real exports value of pulp and paper industries was EUR 7.16 billion and increased by 7% compared to the same period previous year. At the same time the exports value of bleached sulphate pulp increased by 22% and volume by 1%. The exports value of magazine paper increased by 4% and volume by 18%. For fine paper on the exports value decreased by 14% and volume decreased 10%. The exports value of paperboard increased by 8% and volume 15%.
  • The share of paperboard of the exports value of forest industries was just over a quarter in January-September 2021. The share of paper was 23%, pulp 20% and sawn goods 19%.
  • By the end of third quarter of the year wood imports totalled 9.53 million cubic meters and increased from same period previous year by 1%. Of imported wood 57% was pulpwood, 33% chips and 3% logs. Compared to the same period previous year the imports of pulpwood increased by 6% and chips decreased by 4%. In September 2021, 0.97 million cubic meters of wood was imported to Finland.
