Productive soil

Climate change can be mitigated and its impacts can be adapted to by securing the functioning of soil ecosystems and the maintenance of crop yields. We produce scientific information on agricultural and silvicultural management practices and soil functions that increase carbon sequestration and the soil’s carbon stock, and reduce carbon and nutrient losses.

Goals of the ‘Productive soil’ research area

  • Management and maintenance of soil processes (e.g. the role of the microbiome) for the growth potential and water management of arable and forest land
  • Efficiency to soil carbon sequestration and carbon loss management
  • Comprehensive managing of vegetation nutrients water soil atmosphere interactions as a basis for functioning ecosystems and as a tool for climate change mitigation
