The genetic diversity of crops is protected in various ways – the National Plant Genetic Resources Programme turned 20 years

Plant genetic resources are a significant part of biodiversity, both ecologically and financially. The protection of plant genetic resources is firmly linked to crisis preparedness and risk management in society. We coordinate the National Plant Genetic Resources Programme, which turned 20 years in 2023.
The goal of the National Plant Genetic Resources Programme is to protect the genetic diversity of food and feed crops adapted to Finland’s conditions and crops that are significant in the green sector. The protection of plant genetic resources forms the basis of agriculture and horticulture as well as their development. Genetic resources are also valuable on culture-historical terms.
Coordinated by Luke, the National Plant Genetic Resources Programme is part of Finland’s National Genetic Resources programme for Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery. We hold a valuable and diverse central collection of crops adapted to Finnish farming conditions, consisting of approximately a thousand different plant species. The central collection is protected using a backup collection network supported by external service providers.
Plant genetic resources and related research were demonstrated extensively during the 20th anniversary. The anniversary events were kicked off with a series of five lectures, with our research scientists talking about their work to maintain diversity in agricultural and horticultural crops as well as to promote their sustainable use.
