Optimised material cycles

The research area of optimised material cycles aims at developing the bioeconomy based on renewable natural resources by using biomass and the compounds and nutrients it contains effectively and sustainably, while creating new business. The research area studies the opportunities of new biomass processing technologies and their combinations as part of value chains for using organic side streams. The full-scale use of material flows, minimising the loss of carbon and nutrients, and returning them to primary production will enable the sustainable production of biomass that sequesters carbon in agricultural and forest soils.

Goals of the research area of optimised material cycles:

  • Towards zero-waste production chain and consumption.
  • Recovery of nutrients as recycled fertilizers and managing the nutrient cycles in fields and forests to minimize nutrient loss
