SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
We produce research and solutions that help society and sectors related to the use of natural resources both mitigate and adapt to climate change.
We report annual emissions and removals data for the agriculture and land use sectors and continuously work to improve greenhouse gas accounting methods. These data are used in scenario analyses that serve as the foundation for climate and energy policy planning and recommendations related to agriculture and forestry.
In early 2024, a provisional political agreement was reached on the EU Carbon Removals Certification Framework Regulation, which also supports the advancement of national carbon market initiatives. In 2024, we published a policy brief proposing that temporary carbon storage should be included in voluntary carbon markets. This would enable markets to fully support the achievement of Finland’s national emission reduction targets.
Examples of our work to combat climate change include ways to enhance forest growth and resilience, increase the social acceptability of wind power, assess climate change impacts in the tundra, and explore how peatlands can be used for climate-smart food production.
