SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns (2023)
The global economy uses more natural resources than is sustainable within the Earth’s carrying capacity. Our goal is to process research into solutions that ensure the smart and sustainable use of renewable natural resources and raw materials. The circular bioeconomy helps optimise various material flows, use primary and side streams more effectively, and generate new sustainable business.
Published in 2023, our new vision presents probable and preferable pathways towards the resource-smart use of biomasses in Finland. Globally depleting natural resources, the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have increased the need to assess any vulnerabilities in our self-sufficiency and develop the use of local renewable raw materials. According to the vision, all primary and side streams will be used more effectively to produce more added value.
As an example of our activities to promote SDG 12, we present research results of covering and landscaping solutions for mining waste areas suitable for northern conditions. Adding biochar to the surface of the covering layer helps plants grow, reduces erosion and improves the landscape.
