Sustainability goals and reporting in 2023

Goals set for our activities

In 2023, we updated our sustainability goals based on our experiences and lessons learned. The updated goals are highlighted in Italics (in blue below).

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals relevant for Luke

In 2021, we identified five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are most relevant in our activities. In sustainability reporting, we describe how our activities can contribute to achieving these goals.

2 Zero Hunger, 12 Responsible consumption and production, 13 Climate action, 14 Life below water, 15 Life on land

As a research and specialist organisation, we can, above all, have an impact on the selected SDGs by providing reliable information and research-based solutions. We measure our progress in the five selected SDGs through the number of research publications and the proportion of open access publications.

We also monitor the number of synthesis reports that integrate research activities, as well as the number of policy briefs linked to each SDG. Policy briefs address current themes in a concise and well-founded manner to help decision-makers make decisions based on research data.

To identify publications that promote the selected SDGs, the Bergen topic-approach (BTA) queries, developed at the University of Bergen, are used. Queries are run to identify the number of scientific peer-reviewed publications linked to each of the five SDGs and the proportion of these publications that are openly accessible. In the query-based method, publications are identified by searching for the terms used in the query or in the sub-goals or indicators of each SDG in publication titles, keywords and abstracts. The BTA queries were updated in November 2023. These queries updated in 2023 have been used in reporting.
