The value of agricultural and food exports increased by about EUR 23 million in 2020 compared to the previous year, to just over EUR 1.7 billion. The value of imports increased by about EUR 12 million, to about EUR 5.3 billion.
The main import product groups in terms of value were processed food (25 %), beverages and confectionery (11 %) as well as fruit and berries (9 %). The most imported kilograms were feed, fats and alcohol. The most important export product groups in terms of value were milk and dairy products (23%), processed food (19%) and fish and fish products (10%). Some of the fish exports were re-exports of Norwegian salmon via Finland to other countries. Measured in kilograms, most oats, barley and wheat were exported from Finland. Most grain was exported to Germany, the Netherlands and Morocco.
In terms of the value of imports, Finland's most important trading partners were the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Spain. The Netherlands imported the largest variety of waste oils and fats, as well as horticultural plants and their propagating material. Bakery products, feed and cheeses were imported from Germany. In addition to bakery products, confectionery, chocolate, processed food and fish and fish products were imported from Sweden to Finland. In addition to fruits and vegetables, alcoholic beverages were imported to Finland from Spain.
The main export countries were Sweden, Estonia and China. Sweden accounted for the largest share of these exports in terms of value, totaling EUR 0.33 billion. Estonia and China were the next most important export countries with exports of EUR 0.14 billion. The main products for export to Sweden were confectionery, chocolate, butter and yoghurt. Estonia, on the other hand, exported the most fish, alcoholic beverages and coffee.
Chinese exports increased by more than EUR 56 million from the previous year. Two main products were exported to China; pork and milk powder. In 2020, a total of EUR 46 million worth of pork was exported to China, which was almost half of the value of total pork exports. Milk powder was exported to China for 59 million euros.
The United Kingdom was also an important trading partner for Finland; agricultural products and foodstuffs were imported from there for 137 million euros, and exported for more than 30 million euros. In particular, feed, food products and alcoholic beverages were imported to Finland from Great Britain. Imports of alcoholic beverages from the United Kingdom decreased by almost 40% from the previous year. The most important exports were fish and dairy products.
