Foreign trade in agri-food products, 2019

  • A total worth of 5.3 billion euros of agricultural products and foodstuffs were imported to Finland in 2019. The volume of imports remained almost the same, but the value of exports increased by 13% from the previous year, amounting to EUR 1.7 billion.
  • The main importers of agricultural products and food products were the Netherlands (€ 0.72 billion), Germany (€ 0.68 billion) and Sweden (€ 0.58 billion). Norway and Spain were also important importing countries; Norway in particular for salmon, and Spain for vegetables, fruit and spirits.
  • The most important export countries were Sweden (0.35 billion), Estonia (0.15 billion), Germany (0.12 billion) and Russia (0.1 billion). China was also an important export country to Finland (slightly less than 0.1 billion). In addition to pork and dairy products, its exports consisted of, among other things, frozen berries, which were exported there for about 3 million euros, and 12 million kilos of butter from Finland, worth 48 million euros.
  • In 2019, the largest export product groups were dairy and dairy products (22 per cent of the value of agricultural and food exports), other processed foods (19%) and alcohols, beverages, confectionery and tobacco (19%).
  • The United Kingdom was an important trading partner for Finland. A large amount of alcoholic beverages (EUR 35 million) and feed (EUR 24 million) were imported to Finland from the United Kingdom. Total imports were EUR 116 million. Exports from Finland to the United Kingdom amounted to EUR 40 million. The main products were fish, dairy products and confectionery. The value of imports of non-beer alcoholic beverages imported from the United Kingdom fell in 2019, falling to less than half of the previous year, while the volume of imports remained almost unchanged.
