In addition, life cycle assessment and carbon footprints are used in environmental policy-making related to food and bio-based products and fossil based and all other products.

Food carbon footprint results are increasingly used in consumer communication and as a basis for environmental claims in corporate responsibility reporting. Thus the demand for reliable and comparable methods and calculations is ever growing, and this harmonization is developed currently under a large joint project.
