Carbon and other environmental footprint assessments are a primary starting point to identify emission reduction potentials and targets in supply chains. Carbon footprint assessments covering entire value chains are also at the basis of Corporate SBT (Science based targets) initiatives and Greenhouse Gas Protocol scope 3 assessment. In addition, life cycle assessment and carbon footprints are used in environmental policy-making related to food and bio-based products and fossil based and all other products.
Food carbon footprint results are increasingly used in consumer communication and as a basis for environmental claims in corporate responsibility reporting. Thus the demand for reliable and comparable methods and calculations is ever growing, and this harmonization is developed currently under a large joint project.
