Number of organic food enterprises
In 2021, there were 5 957 organic enterprises, including organic primary production, organic food enterprises, organic feed enterprises and organic seed packaging plants. This figure increased from 2020.
In 2021, Finnish Food Authority and ELY Centres supervised 780 organic food processing enterprises in Mainland Finland. This figure also includes enterprises with a low processing rate. In 2019, the number of enterprises was 771 and 810 in 2020. The latest numbers cannot be compared to previous years because of the change in the data collection in 2016. Almost one fifth of all organic food processing enterprises of Mainland Finland are located in Uusimaa.
In particular, Finland has a large number of organic mill product enterprises. Organic products account for approximately 2.5% of all food retail (according to Pro Luomu).
The aim of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry regarding public sector food services has been that 20% of food offered through food services was organic by 2020.
Description of the indicator
The indicator represents development in the organic food industry and the development potential of organic enterprises.
The number of organic food enterprises is obtained from registers of the Finnish Food Authority.
This is one of the national impact indicators of the 2014–2020 Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland.
The indicator will next be updated in spring 2023.
