Number of personnel in rural enterprises

In 2018, there were about 81,000 rural enterprises and the number of employees was 300,563. The number of employees in rural enterprises increased by about 17 per cent from 2017 to 2018. From 2013 to 2018, the number of rural enterprises has decreased slightly. More than a third of rural enterprises operate in the construction and trade sectors.

In 2018, the number of employees in rural small and medium-sized enterprises was about 217,000 and in large enterprises about 84,000. The number of large enterprises in rural areas has increased by about 40 percent and the number of employees has almost doubled since 2017.

Most of the rural companies and their personnel are in Uusimaa, Southwest Finland and Northern Ostrobothnia.

Description of the indicator

This indicator measures how the number of personnel has developed in rural enterprises and evaluates the development of employment. The indicator data includes both entrepreneurs and hired employees.

Statistics Finland produces this indicator data.

This is one of the national impact indicators of the 2014–2020 Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland.

The indicator will next be updated in spring 2022.
