Forest industry production 2018

  • In 2018, forest industry production continued to increase in the majority of the main product categories. Chemical pulp and paperboard maintained their position as drivers of this growth.
  • The production volumes of sawn softwood increased by one per cent to 11.8 million cubic metres. Of this, the proportion of spruce amounted to 6.0 million cubic metres (51 per cent).
  • The production of chemical pulp reached a new record at 8.2 million tonnes. This figure was six per cent higher than in the previous year, and as much as 18 per cent higher than on average during the preceding ten-year period.
  • Contrary to previous years, the production of printing and writing paper turned to a slight increase. The total production volume of paper was 6.7 million tonnes, being one per cent higher than in 2017.
  • Paperboard also reached a new production record at 3.8 million tonnes, showing an increase of five per cent from the preceding year and nearly one-third in terms of the long-term average.
  • The most recent statistics on the gross and value added of production in the forest industries cover the year 2017. The gross value in the forest industries of EUR 21.2 billion represented 18 per cent of the total gross value of production in manufacturing industries.
