Foreign trade in fish 2016

  • In 2016, the amount of fish and fish products exported from Finland was 71 million kilos.­ The volume of exported fish increased by two million kilos from the year before, but the value of exports, EUR 57 million, increased by as much as EUR 19 million.
  • The amount of fish exported for human consumption amounted to nearly 56 million kilos, and that of products to be used for other purposes to almost 15 million kilos.
  • The key export countries for fish and fish products were Estonia (EUR 21 million), Denmark (EUR 12 million), Belarus (nearly EUR 8 million) and Latvia (nearly EUR 5 million). The value of fish and fish products exported to Russia and Sweden amounted to around EUR three million. The value of exports to these countries increased compared to the previous year.
  • The most important export products included fresh salmon and rainbow ­trout, fresh and frozen Baltic herring and sprat, fish roe and roe products, and animal feed.
  • In 2016, about 101 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported to Finland. Compared to the year before, the import volume decreased by 12 million kilos, but the total value increased by EUR 21 million to EUR 398 ­million.
  • The amount of fish imported for human consumption was 74 million kilos. The volume of products classified as food amounted to half a million kilos, while their value was greater than that of the previous year by EUR 34 million.
  • The most important import countries for fish and fish products included ­Norway (EUR 197 million), Sweden (EUR 72 million), Denmark (EUR 30 million) and Estonia (EUR 17 million).
  • Of the total import volume, 44% (45 million kilos) originated in Norway. The main items imported for human consumption from Norway were whole fresh sea salmon (25 million kilos), shrimp and prawn, and herring preserves and preparations.‑­
  • The volume of fish and fish products imported from Sweden totalled 18 million kilos and from Denmark 11 million kilos.­
