Foreign trade in agri-food products, 5/2020 (preliminary)

• In May 2020, exports of agricultural products and foodstuffs amounted to approximately EUR 0.13 billion and imports amounted to EUR 0.43 billion. The value of exports of agricultural products and foodstuffs decreased by about 16% from May of the previous year. The value of imports decreased by 18% during the same period.
• The value of grain exports remained high. The value of exports in the harvest season 2020/2019 (July-May) was almost 80% higher than in the corresponding period 2019/2018. During the same period, the volume of exports doubled. In May 2020, the volume of grain exports was about 72 million kilograms. The value of grain imports fell by almost 50% over the same period.
• The value of meat imports decreased by more than a third compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Meat exports, on the other hand, increased by about 7 percent. The value of imports of milk and dairy products decreased by about 12% from the corresponding period of the previous year and the value of exports by about 5%.
• The value of vegetable imports increased by 10% in May compared to May of the previous year, with the value of exports doubling at the same time. The value of imports of fruit and berries increased by 7% from the corresponding period of the previous year, and the value of their exports halved.
• The value of alcohol imports fell by a third compared to May of the previous year, with the value of exports falling by just under half over the same period. The value of tobacco imports also fell by about a quarter.
• The value of imports of beverages and confectionery fell by  30% from the previous May, while the value of exports fell by about a quarter. The value of imports of processed food decreased by about 18 per cent, while the value of exports fell by less than a third.
• The value of imports of fats and oils increased by about one-fifth from the previous May, while the value of exports decreased by about 10%.
