Profitability of fishery 2015

  • In 2015, there were 1,747 companies working in the fisheries sector.  Of these, 72 percent were fishing companies, most of them engaged in small-scale fishing. 
  • The fishing industry provided 2,536 person-years of employment. Fish processing provided the most employment, 32 per cent of the entire sector. Fishing accounted for 14, aquaculture for 14 and fish trade 40 per cent. The number of person-years increased in primary production and decreased in fish processing and retail trade.
  • In 2015, the total income of fishery sector companies was EUR 839 million. Fish processing was the segment with the biggest income, EUR 302 million. The next largest segments were wholesale and retail trades of fish. The total income of primary production was EUR 104 million.
  • The added value produced by the fishery industry was EUR 122 million, most of which (EUR 45 million) came from fish processing. Wholesale trade produced the second-biggest added value, EUR 26 million. Retail trade produced EUR 18 million, aquaculture 17 million and fishing 16 million in added value.
  • With a net result of EUR 5.6 million, fish processing was also the most profitable segment of the fishery industry. Fishing produced a net result of EUR 3.4 million and wholesale trade a net result of EUR 0.1 million.  Aquaculture companies made a loss of EUR 0.3 million and retail trade a loss of EUR 6.6 million.
