Profitability of fishery 2016

  • In 2016, there were 1,779 companies working in the fisheries sector.  Of these, 73 percent were fishing companies, most of them engaged in small-scale fishing.
  • The fishing industry provided 2,502 person-years of employment. Fish processing provided the most employment, 30 per cent of the entire sector. Fishing accounted for 12, aquaculture for 14 and fish trade 44 per cent. The number of person-years increased in primary production and decreased in fish processing and retail trade.
  • In 2016, the total revenues of fishery sector companies were EUR 901 million. Wholesale trade was the segment with the biggest revenues, EUR 322 million. The next largest segments were fish processing and retail trade of fish. The total revenues of primary production were EUR 110 million.
  • The added value produced by the fishery industry was EUR 146 million, most of which (EUR 44 million) came from fish processing. Wholesale trade produced the second-biggest added value, EUR 35 million. Retail trade produced EUR 27 million, aquaculture 20 million and fishing 19 million in added value.
  • With a net result of EUR 6.6 million, retail trade was the most profitable segment of the fishery industry. Fishing produced a net result of EUR 6.5 million and aquaculture companies a net result of EUR 1.8 million. Fish processing companies produced  a net result  of EUR 5.7 million and wholesale trade a net result of EUR 5.2 million.
