Profitability of fishery (all sectors)

  • In 2014, a total of 1,789 enterprises operated in fisheries industry in Finland.  72 per cent of these were fishing companies, most of which were engaged in small-scale fishing. 
  •  The fishing industry provided employment equivalent to 2,827 person-years. The largest employer was fish processing, accounting for 38 per cent of the whole industry. Fishing accounted for 12 per cent, aquaculture for 12 per cent and the fish retail and wholesale for 38 per cent. The number of person-years decreased in primary production and increased in fish processing and wholesale.
  •  In 2014, the total income of fishery enterprises amounted to EUR 957 million. The largest sector in terms of income was fish processing, EUR 399 million. The next largest sectors were fish wholesale and retail. Primary production total income totalled EUR 102 million.
  •  The value added by the fisheries industry totalled EUR 153 million, most of which was attributable to fish processing. Both fish wholesale and fish retail produced an added value of EUR 28 million. The value added by fishing totalled EUR 17 million and that by aquaculture EUR 16 million.
  •  Fish processing was the most profitable fishing industry sector, producing a net profit of EUR approximately 10 million. The net profit of fishing was EUR 3.7 million, that of fish wholesale EUR 3 million and that of fish retail EUR 1.5 million. Aquaculture enterprises recorded an aggregate loss of EUR 0.7 million.
