In 2019, exports in forest industries covered nearly one fifth of Finland’s total goods exports, amounting to EUR 12.47 billion. Compared with the previous year, the value of forest industry exports decreased by 6% in real terms (deflated using the wholesale price index).
The value of exports of wood products industry totalled EUR 2.76 billion, down by 5% from the previous year in real terms. The most significant export products were sawn goods and plywood. Sawn goods accounted for 63% and plywood 18% of the value of exports of wood product industry. The volume of exported sawn goods increased by 3% from the previous year, while the value of their exports decreased by 7% in real terms. The export volume of plywood decreased by 9%, and its value fell by 11%.
The value of exports in the pulp and paper industry was EUR 9.7 billion (-7% from the previous year). Pulp accounted for one quarter, paper 41% and board 30% of this value, while converted paper and board products made up 4%. The export volume of bleached sulphate pulp, the most important pulp type, increased by a little more than 10% from the previous year, while its low price reduced its export value by nearly the same amount. The most important paper types were fine paper and magazine paper.
Finland imported 11.86 million cubic metres of wood in 2019, up by 3% from the previous year. Of all imported wood, pulpwood made up 57%, wood chips 33% and logs 3%. Birch pulpwood was the most imported wood assortment, accounting for 40% of the total wood import volume. Pulpwood imports decreased by 7% from the previous year, while chip imports increased by 26%. Wood was imported from Russia and the Baltic countries. Russia was the key import country, accounting for 74% of all wood imports. It was followed by Estonia (11%) and Latvia (10%).
