Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 3/2021 (preliminary)

  • In the first quarter of the year the exports value of forest industry products totalled in real terms EUR 2.83 billion and increased from same period previous year by 9% (deflated using wholesale price index). The exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 1.08 billion in March 2021.
  • The most in important exports products of forest industry in the first quarter of the year were sawn goods and other coated paperboard (multi-ply paperboard coated with kaolin and paperboard coated with plastics). They both had 17% share of the exports value of forest industries. Third was bleached sulphate pulp with 16% share. The share of paperboard was 26% and it passed paper which share was 24% of exports value of forest industries.
  • The exports value of wood-products industries was EUR 0.76 billion in the first quarter of the year. The exports value increased by 35% in real terms compared to the same period previous year. The exports value of sawn goods increased by 45% and volume 25%. The exports price for sawn goods has been increasing and it was in March 2021 224 EUR/cubic meter. For plywood the exports value increased by 46% and volume by 50%.
  • In January-March 2021, the real exports value of pulp and paper industries was EUR 2.07 billion and increased by 2% compared to the same period previous year. In the same time the exports value and volume of bleached sulphate pulp increased both 22%. The exports value of paperboard increased by 9% and volume 16%. The exports value of magazine paper decreased by 10% and but volume increased by 3%. For fine paper on the exports value decreased by 25% and volume decreased 19%.
  • In March 2021 1.14 million cubic meters of wood was imported to Finland. In January-March wood imports totalled 3.14 million cubic meters and increased from same period previous year by 9%. Of imported wood 51% was pulpwood, 36% chips and 4% logs. The imports of pulpwood increased by 15% and chips decreased by 3% compared to the beginning of previous year. The imports of logs increased by 3%.
  • Of imported wood in the first quarter of the year 70% originated from Russia, 12% from Estonia and 10% from Latvia.
