In 2020, The exports value of forest industry products totalled in real terms EUR 10.47 billion and accounted 18 per cent of Finland’s goods exports. The exports value of forest industry products decreased from previous year by 14 per cent (deflated using wholesale price index).
The exports value of wood-products industries totalled in real terms EUR 2.53 billion and decreased from previous year by six per cent. The most important exports products were sawn goods and plywood. The share of sawn goods of the exports value of forest industry products was 15 per cent and for plywood four per cent. The exports value of sawn goods decreased from previous year by seven per cent and volume by eight per cent. For plywood both the exports value and volume decreased by a tenth.
The exports value of pulp and paper industries decreased in real terms by 16 per cent from previous year to EUR 7.94 billion. The share of both paper and paperboard was 27 per cent of the exports value of forest industry products and the share of pulp was 18 per cent. Most of the exported pulp was bleached sulphate pulp (16% of the exports value of forest industries). The exports value of bleached sulphate pulp decreased by 22 per cent and the exports volume by eight per cent. The most exported paper products were magazine paper (10% share of the exports value of forest industries) and fine paper (11%). The exports value of magazine paper decreased by 32 per cent and for fine paper 31 per cent. For both papers the exports volume decreased by 28 per cent. The export value and volume of paperboard did not change from previous year.
In 2020 wood imports totalled 12.58 million cubic metres and increased from previous year by six per cent. Of imported wood 54 per cent was pulpwood, 53 per cent chips and four per cent logs. The share of fuelwood, preserved wood and wood residues was eight per cent. Compared to previous year the imports of pulpwood decreased by one per cent and the imports of chips increased by 11 per cent.
Of imported wood 76 per cent originated from Russia in 2020. Next most was imported from Estonia and Latvia both with nine per cent share of wood imports.
