Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 11/2022 (preliminary)

Forest industry products worth 1.29 billion euros were exported from Finland in November 2022. The share of forest industry products of Finland's goods exports was 16 percent.

  • In January-November, the value of the exports of forest industry products was 13.84 billion euros in real terms. The value was 7 percent lower than the average for the corresponding periods of the previous ten years (deflation: wholesale price index, 1949=100). The share of pulp and paper industry in the export of forest industry products was 71 percent.
  • In January-November, paperboard was the most significant product group of Finnish forest industry exports, although towards the end of the year the value of monthly exports of magazine paper and fine paper increased. The decrease of paper exports and the growth of paperboard exports has been a key change in the structure of the export of forest industry products in recent years.
  • In November, the imports of wood were 0.65 million cubic meters. During spring and early summer, wood imports were at their lowest, but towards the end of the year, the monthly quantities have gradually increased.
  • In January-November 2022, wood imports were 5.05 million cubic meters. In the corresponding period in 2021, wood imports totalled 11.57 million cubic meters, so the decrease was 56 %. Of imported wood, 55 percent was pulpwood, 30 percent chips and 2 percent logs.
  • Practically no Russian wood has imported in Finland since the summer. At the same time, wood imports from Estonia, Sweden and Latvia has increased. Before the Ukraine war, more than 70 percent of the Finland’s wood imports originated from Russia.
