In April 2021, fish and fish products were imported to Finland worth approximately EUR 34 million; about 6.7 million kilos. Of this, 1.1 million kilos were transit imports of fresh whole salmon, where salmon was exported to other parts of Europe via Finland. In April, 2.1 million kilos of salmon imported to Finland remained in the country.
The value of imports increased by 9 percent from the corresponding period of the previous year, while the volume of imports decreased by 7 percent. The main importing countries by value of imports were Norway, Sweden and Poland. Salmon and shrimp were mainly imported from Norway, rainbow trout from Sweden and fish products and preserves. Frozen saithe and various fish products and preserves were imported from Poland. Norway accounted for 68% of imports.
In April, 89% of the fish imported was fish for human consumption. About 11% were fish for non-human comsumption (709,000 kg). The amount of fish for non-human consumption in April was almost a third higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
The most important import items were fresh whole salmon (3.2 million kg) and canned tuna (0.6 million kg), as well as other canned fish (0.6 million kg).
In April, about 4.7 million kilos of fish and fish products were exported from Finland. Transit exports of fresh whole salmon accounted for 24% of this. In total, the value of exports in March was just under EUR 10 million.
In April, 98 percent of exported fish for fish for human consumption. 114,000 kilos of fish were exported for feed, which was about 8 times less than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
The largest exports were frozen whole herring (1.9 million kg), fresh whole salmon (1.1 million kg) and fresh whole herring (1 million kg).
In April, the value of exports fell by about 9 percent year-on-year, while the volume of exports fell by about 21 percent at the same time. The main exporting countries in terms of export value were France, Estonia, Belarus and Poland. According to the volume of exports, the main countries were Estonia, France, Belarus and Ukraine.
