Foreign trade in fish 2022

Finland exported 106 million kilos of fish and fish products in 2022, up by 27 million kilos from the previous year. The value of exports, EUR 310 million, increased by EUR 126 million. The value of exports of fresh whole salmon from Norway to the rest of Europe increased from €130 million to €234 million.

  • Exports for human consumption amounted to 95 million kilos and 11 million kilos for non-human consumption.
  • The main countries of origin for fish and fish products were France (€44 million), Poland (€37 million), Estonia (€35 million), Lithuania (€32 million), the Netherlands (€28 million) and Italy (€25 million). 18% of transit exports of fresh whole salmon went to France and 16% to Poland. Lithuania, the Netherlands, Spain, German and Italy followed with a combined share of 52%.
  • Fresh whole salmon remained by far the most important export by value. The other products with the highest value were roe and roe products, frozen whole Baltic herring and fishmeal.
  • In 2022, 97 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported into Finland, an increase of over six million kilos compared to the previous year. The value of imports, at €652 million, increased by €192 million. The main imports by value were fresh salmon, canned tuna and fresh salmon and trout fillets.
  • Imports of fishery products for human consumption amounted to 91 million kilos, an increase of seven million kilos in volume and 188 million euro in value compared to the previous year.
  • The main fish and fish products importing countries were Norway (€442 million), Sweden (€54 million) and Denmark (€20 million).
  • Norway accounted for 61% of total imports (59 million kilos). The most imported product was fresh whole Atlantic salmon for human consumption (49 million kilos), of which 33 million kilos were exported as such. Other imports included fresh fillets and shrimps.
  • Nine million kilos of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden and four million kilos from Denmark.
