Foreign trade in agri-food products 2021 (preliminary)

  • The value of imports of agricultural products and foodstuffs in 2021 was approximately EUR 5.5 billion. The value of imports increased by more than 4 percent from the previous year. The value of exports was about EUR 1.8 billion, which was 3 percent more than in 2020.
  • The most important import product groups were Food Products (25%), Beverages, Confectionery and Tobacco (20%) and Fruits, Berries and Vegetables (14%). The most important product groups in exports were dairy and dairy products (21%), processed food (20%) and beverages, confectionery and tobacco (18%).
  • In terms of the value of imports, Finland's most important trading partners were the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Spain. The Netherlands imported the largest variety of waste oils and fats, as well as horticultural plants and their propagating material.
  • Bakery products, feed and cheeses were imported from Germany. Confectionery, chocolate, bakery products and processed food were imported to Sweden from Sweden. In addition to fruits and vegetables, e.g. alcoholic beverages.
  • The main exporting countries were Sweden, Estonia and China and Germany. Sweden accounted for the largest share of these exports in terms of value, at a total of EUR 0.37 billion; mainly sweets, chocolate, bakery products, yoghurt and butter.
  • Exports to Estonia amounted to approximately EUR 152 million, e.g. alcoholic beverages, bakery products and confectionery. Exports of agricultural products and foodstuffs to China amounted to 150 million euros, mainly milk and whey powder and pork. Chinese exports increased by more than EUR 4 million (+3%) from the previous year.
  • The importance of the United Kingdom, a former major trading partner, declined, with imports of agricultural products and foodstuffs by only EUR 112 million (-19%) in 2021 and exports of EUR 13 million (-57%).
