Published 16.3.2023

The only years in which this was higher in real terms were the peak years of 2007 and 2018. The operating profit increased from the previous year due to lower investments in wood production.

  • The operating profit per hectare increased by EUR 12 (8%) from the previous year, but only by 1% in real terms, when the change in value of money was adjusted by the cost of living index. Compared with the average for the previous five years, the result was up 14%.
  • In Southern Finland, the operating result was EUR 216 per hectare, up 1% in real terms on the previous year. In Northern Finland, the result was EUR 66 per hectare (-2%). Northern Finland includes the regions of North Ostrobothnia, Kainuu and Lapland.
  • Earnings of wood production in non-industrial private forestry totaled EUR 2,482 million (EUR 182 per hectare). The earnings comprise gross stumpage earnings, which are calculated by multiplying the felling volume by standing sales prices.
  • Estimated investment in wood production fell to EUR 13 per hectare (€183 million), 14% lower in real terms than in the previous year. This amount includes an estimate of the value of the self-made work done by forest owners. The total cost of wood production in non-industrial private forestry, including an estimate of administrative and other expenditure, fell to EUR 18 per hectare (-12%).
  • Some investments are funded by state subsidies for non-industrial private forestry. In 2022, state subsidies were EUR 37 million (EUR 2.7 per hectare). The total of subsidies decreased by EUR 5.5 million from the previous year. EUR 20 million of assigned subsidies remained unused, which is more than ever before.
  • The nominal values have been converted into real values using the cost-of-living index. Cost-of-living index increased by 6,8 per cent in 2022 from the previous year.
