Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 9/2022 (preliminary)

In September 2022, the exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 1.35 billion and decreased from previous year in real terms by 4% (deflated using wholesale price index). Of the exports value the share of paper was a fair quarter and paperboard 24%. The share of pulp was a fair fifth. Sawn goods covered 16% and plywood 5%.

  • In January-September the exports value of forest industry products totalled in real terms EUR 11.29 billion and decreased from previous year by 6% (deflated using wholesale price index). Paperboard covered 29% of the exports value. Sawn goods, paper and pulp covered each slightly less than a fifth.
  • At the same time the exports value of wood-products industries was EUR 3.40 billion and stayed in the same level compared to previous year. The exports value of sawn goods decreased by 5% and volume by 3%. For plywood the exports value increased by 7% and volume decreased by 3%.
  • The real exports value of pulp and paper industries was EUR 7.89 billion and decreased by 8% compared to previous year. At the same time the exports value of bleached sulphate pulp decreased by 7% and volume decreased by 11%. The exports value of magazine paper decreased by 13% and volume by 29%. For fine paper the exports value decreased by 35% and volume decreased 49%. The exports value of paperboard increased by 6% and volume 2%.
  • In January-September, wood imports totalled 3.93 million cubic meters and decreased by 59% from same period previous year. Of imported wood 52% was pulpwood, 32% chips and 2% logs. Compared to the same period previous year, the imports of pulpwood decreased by 62%. The imports of chips decreased by 61% and logs 71%. 
  • In September 2022 wood imports totalled 0.44 million cubic meters and decreased by 42% compared to the average monthly import volume previous year. Of imported wood in September 31% originated from Latvia, 27% from Sweden and 24% from Estonia.
  • Of imported wood in January-September 38% originated from Russia, 23% from Estonia and 19% from Latvia.
