Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 7/2023 (preliminary)

In July 2023 the exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 0.84 billion which was in real terms 27% smaller the average monthly export value in 2022. The volume of wood imports ended up at 0.25 million cubic metres, which was the lowest monthly import volume this year.

Wood imports

• Of imported wood in July 59% was pulpwood and a fair quarter of chips. The share of logs was 1% and fuelwood and by-products wood 14%.
• In January-July, the volume of wood imports totalled 3.14 million cubic metres and increased by 3% compared to the previous year. Imports of pulpwood were 28% higher than in the previous year. The import volume of chips decreased by 28% and that of logs by 15%.

Exports of the forest industries

• In January-July the exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 7.08 billion, which was in real terms 11 smaller than the same period previous year (deflated using wholesale price index, 1949=100).
• In July 2023, the export price of sawn goods was EUR 228 per cubic metre, 22% lower in real terms than the average price of the previous year. The price of plywood was EUR 747 per cubic metre, 3% higher in real terms than the previous year's average.
• Among the most important exports from the pulp and paper industries, export prices of magazine paper and paperboard rose slightly. Both export prices were 2% higher than the average of the previous year. The export price of bleached sulphate pulp was almost a quarter lower in real terms in July than the average for the previous year, at EUR 544 per tonne. The export price of fine paper ended up at EUR 1 047 per tonne, almost a tenth below the average price of the previous year in real terms.
