Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 5/2022 (preliminary)

  • In January-May, wood imports totalled 2.43 million cubic meters and decreased by 55% from same period previous year. Of imported wood 46% was pulpwood, 36% chips and 3% logs. Compared to the same period previous year the imports of pulpwood decreased by 61%. The imports of chips decreased by 53% and logs 66%.  In May wood imports totalled 0.28 million cubic meters.
  • Of imported wood in January-May 59% originated from Russia, 18% from Estonia and 13% from Latvia. In May 2022, only 13% of imported wood originated from Russia and was mainly by-products wood (wood waste and scrap, sawdust and pellets).
  • In January-May 2022 the exports value of forest industry products totalled in real terms EUR 5.78 billion and decreased from previous year by 7% (deflated using wholesale price index). The exports value of forest industries was EUR 1.26 billion in May.
  • At the same time the exports value of wood-products industries was EUR 2.00 billion and increased by 19% in real terms compared to previous year. The exports value of sawn goods increased by 16% and volume decreased by 4%. For plywood the exports value increased by 8% and volume decreased by 2%.
  • The real exports value of pulp and paper industries was EUR 3.78 billion and decreased by 16% compared to previous year. At the same time the exports value of bleached sulphate pulp decreased by 18% and volume decreased by 23%. The exports value of magazine paper decreased by 33% and volume by 44%. For fine paper the exports value decreased by 64% and volume decreased 73%. The exports value of paperboard increased by 10% and volume 5%.
