Foreign trade in fish 2023 (preliminary)
The value of fish and fish products imported into Finland for human consumption in 2023 was EUR 547 million, of which EUR 183 million was fresh whole salmon transiting to the rest of Europe. The value of products imported for human consumption excluding salmon throughput decreased from EUR 409 million in the previous year to EUR 364 million. The value of products imported for purposes other than human consumption was EUR 8 million.
The main imports by value were fresh whole salmon, prepared and preserved fish and fresh salmon and trout fillets.
Excluding salmon, the value of products exported for human consumption was EUR 64 million. The value of products exported for purposes other than human consumption was EUR 15 million.
- The volume of fish products imported for human consumption was 78 million kilos, 14 million kilos less than in the previous year.
- The main fish and fish products importing countries were Norway (EUR 350 million), Sweden (EUR 50 million) and Denmark (EUR 21 million).
- Norway accounted for 58% of total imports (47 million kilos). The most imported product was fresh whole Atlantic salmon for human consumption (39 million kilos), of which 26 million kilos were exported as such. Other imports included fresh fillets and shrimps.
- Eight million kilos of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden and four million kilos from Denmark.
- The volume of products exported for human consumption was 76 million kilos, of which 26 million kilos of salmon went from Norway to Europe. 8 million kilos were exported for non-human consumption.
- The main countries exporting fresh whole salmon were Poland (EUR 38 million), the Netherlands (EUR 34 million), France (EUR 24 million), Lithuania (EUR 20 million) and Spain (EUR 18 million).
- Exports of other products were mainly to Estonia (EUR 28 million), Sweden (EUR 12 million), Latvia (EUR 5 million).
