Foreign trade in fish 2022 (preliminary)

Finland exported 83 million kilos of fish and fish products in 2022, up by four million kilos from the previous year. The value of exports, EUR 291 million, increased by EUR 108 million. The value of exports of fresh whole salmon from Norway to the rest of Europe increased from €130 million to €231 million.

  • Exports for human consumption amounted to 72 million kilos and 11 million kilos for non-human consumption.
  • The main countries of origin for fish and fish products were France (€43 million), Poland (€37 million), Lithuania (€31 million), the Netherlands (€27 million), Italy and Estonia (€25 million). 18% of transit exports of fresh whole salmon went to France and 15% to Poland. Lithuania, the Netherlands and Italy followed with a combined share of 36%.
  • Fresh whole salmon remained by far the most important export by value. The other products with the highest value were roe and roe products, frozen Baltic herring and fishmeal.
  • In 2022, 95 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported into Finland, an increase of four million kilos compared to the previous year. The value of imports, at €636 million, increased by €175 million. The main imports by value were fresh salmon, canned tuna and fresh salmon and trout fillets.
  • Imports of fishery products for human consumption amounted to 89 million kilos, an increase of 5 million kilos in volume and 172 million euro in value compared to the previous year.
  • The main fish and fish products importing countries were Norway (€441 million), Sweden (€50 million) and Denmark (€18 million).
  • Norway accounted for 62% of total imports (59 million kilos). The most imported product was fresh whole Atlantic salmon for human consumption (49 million kilos), of which 32 million kilos were exported as such. Other imports included fresh fillets and shrimps.
  • Eight million kilos of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden and three million kilos from Denmark.
