Foreign trade in fish 2021

Finland exported 79 million kilos of fish and fish products in 2021. The volume of exports decreased by 4.1 million kilos from the previous year. The value of exports, 184 million euros, increased by 4,9 million euros. The value of further exports of fresh whole salmon imported from Norway to the rest of Europe increased from EUR 115 million to EUR 130 million.

• The volume of products exported for human consumption was 72 million kilograms, and seven million kilograms were exported for non-human consumption.
• The main exporting countries for fish and fish products were Estonia (€ 29 million), Lithuania (€ 25 million), Poland (€ 25 million), France (€ 25 million) and Spain (€ 12 million), with 20% of fresh salmon exports to Lithuania and followed by France, Spain and Germany with a combined share of 34%.
• The most important export products from Finland were fresh whole salmon and rainbow trout, frozen herring and roe and roe products.
• 90,5 million kilos of fish and fish products were imported to Finland in 2021. Compared to the previous year, the volume of imports decreased by 7 million kilos. The value of imports, EUR 460,5 million, increased by EUR 3,6 million. The main imports in terms of value were fresh salmon, canned tuna and fresh salmon and trout fillets.
• The volume of fish products imported for human consumption was 84 million kilograms, which was 7.3 million kilograms less but worth over 4 million euros more than in the previous year.
• The main importing countries for fish and fish products were Norway (EUR 302 million), Sweden (EUR 39 million) and Denmark (EUR 18 million).
• Almost 66 percent (56 million kilos) of total imports came from Norway. Most fresh sea salmon (45 million kilos) was imported for human consumption, of which 25 million kilos were exported as such. In addition, shrimp and herring products and preserves were imported.
• Almost eight million kilograms of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden and five million kilograms from Denmark.
