Profitability of fishery 2019

  • A total of 1,459 companies operated in the fishery industry in 2019. Of these, 70% were fishing companies, most of them practising small-scale fishing.
  • The fishery industry provided 2,342 person-years of employment, Fish processing was the largest sector, covering 35% of the entire industry. Wholesale and retail accounted for 41% combined, aquaculture for 14% and fishing for 11%. The number of person-years increased in fishing and wholesale, but decreased in fish processing and fish retail trade.
  • In 2019, the total income of fishery industry companies amounted to EUR 930 million. Fish processing produced the highest income at EUR 404 million, followed by wholesale with total income of EUR 314 million. Fish retail trade produced total income of EUR 98 million, aquaculture EUR 78 million and fishing EUR 37 million.
  • The added value produced by the fishery industry amounted to EUR 146 million, most of which (EUR 53 million) came from fish processing. Wholesale produced the second largest added value at EUR 37 million.
  • With its net results of EUR 7.6 million, fish processing was the most profitable sector in the fishery industry. Wholesale achieved almost the same net results at EUR 7.1 million. The net results of fishing were EUR 5.2 million, and those of fish retail trade were EUR 3.7 million. Aquaculture companies produced a loss of EUR 3.1 million.
