SACURIMA gets recognition for creating a safer agriculture industry

Safety Culture and Risk Management in Agriculture was a Luke lead COST Action that has succeeded in identifying vulnerable populations and groups in agriculture, and feeding research into policy recommendations.

Agriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in Europe, causing severe injuries and illnesses like accidents caused by machinery or livestock, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The level of danger in agriculture varies depending on the country and industry which makes it difficult to identify vulnerable workers. However, farms could decrease many risks with better risk management.  Therefore, COST Office in Brussels published an article about SACURIMA Action achievements.

By setting-up an interdisciplinary network of researchers, COST Action SACURIMA analysed the reasons why some countries were more successful than others in reducing agricultural injuries. The project brought together researchers and professionals from diverse backgrounds and many industries to create new approaches.

The research activities in SACURIMA were directed in two main areas: identifying vulnerable populations and making policy recommendations. A detailed list of different groups of vulnerable populations in agriculture highlights the complexity of the existing problems and the need for targeted approaches. The most vulnerable populations identified in SACURIMA were, the very young and the very old; new farmers and farmworkers; foreign, immigrants, seasonal, and migrant workers; and workers with traumatic injuries or disabilities.

To inform policymakers about the need to support the health, safety & wellbeing of farmers and agricultural workers, SACURIMA published five policy recommendations and arranged a series of high-level meetings with EU Officials. The recommendations are based on empirical input from employer and employee organisations.

The joint efforts by the multidisciplinary team under SACURIMA and the additional parallel research initiatives have led to a ripple effect. For example, a new funding call was added to Horizon Europe addressing issues highlighted in SACURIMA’s policy recommendations.

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding organisation for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and beyond and enable researchers and innovators to grow their ideas in any science and technology field by sharing them with their peers. COST Actions are bottom-up networks with a duration of four years that boost research, innovation and careers.
