Natural Resources Institute Finland will be responsible for Finland’s statistics on food and natural resources
In addition to its wide-ranging research mission, the Natural Resources Institute Finland will serve as one of Finland’s four statistics authorities. The statistical service areas of the organisations merged to form the Natural Resources Institute Finland – Tike’s agricultural statistics, Metla’s forestry statistics and RKTL’s game and fisheries statistics – will be consolidated into a statistical service for natural resources and food. The new institute will be responsible for the production of these statistics.
- Johanna Laiho-Kauranne, Director of Statistics at Tike, who headed up the merger of statistical services, says that the new institute will provide interested parties with better access to data on food and natural resources.
Current plans include a shared online service for statistics on food and natural resources and very close cooperation with the Natural Resources Institute Finland’s researchers.
Most of the statistics on food and natural resources are included in the Official Statistics of Finland (OSF). As a producer of official statistics, the Natural Resources Institute Finland will guarantee the continuity of statistics and commits itself to upholding the shared quality criteria of OSF producers and the quality criteria of the European Statistical System.
The operations of the Natural Resource Institute Finland are regulated by the Act on Natural Resources Statistics (562/2014) and the Statistics Act (280/2004). These acts lay down provisions on, for example, the liability of information providers to disclose data, processing of information, and the quality and accessibility of statistical data.Luke is Finland’s second-largest research organisationThe Natural Resources Institute Finland will become the second-largest research institute in Finland. Its mission is to promote competitive business operations based on the sustainable use of renewable natural resources as well as wellbeing and the vitality of rural areas.
The research institutes operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s administrative sector – that is, the statistical services of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute (RKTL), the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) and the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Tike) – will be merged into the Natural Resources Institute Finland at the turn of the year.
