Forest resources by region

  • The volume of the growing stock on forest land and poorly productive forest land totals 2,473 million cubic metres. Of the growing stock, 90% is located on forest land available for wood production.
  • The mean volume of the growing stock on forest land is 118 cubic metres per hectare. The mean volume is 143 cubic metres per hectare in Southern Finland and 87 cubic metres per hectare in Northern Finland.
  • Of the volume of the growing stock on forest land and poorly productive forest land, 64% is under private ownership. The state owns 21% and companies 9% of the growing stock. Municipalities, parishes and associations own 6% of the growing stock.
  • The annual increment of growing stock on forest land and poorly productive forest land totals 107 million cubic metres. Mean growth of the growing stock per hectare is 4.7 cubic metres. The annual mean increment is 6.7 cubic metres per hectare in Southern Finland and 2.7 cubic metres per hectare in Northern Finland.
  • The maximum sustainable roundwood cutting possibilities for 2015–2024 is estimated at 84.3 million cubic metres per annum. Of this estimate, 75% is located in Southern Finland and 25% in Northern Finland.

Whole country results are based on calculations made in 2014–2017 during the 12th National Forest Inventory (NFI12). Regional statistics are also based on material compiled during the 11th National Forest Inventory in 2013. Regional growth figures of growing stocks have not been updated in this publication.
