Timber from first thinnings in Northern Finland

Ensiharvennusrästit

The underlying motivation is to stimulate wood supply from young forests in Northern Finland. Our aim is to find out the clusters of delayed first thinnings to estimate the magnitude of the potential of raw wood material in the region of the two northernmost provinces. Having estimated the raw wood potential from these delayed first thinnings we produce simulations on alternative measures to conduct feasible (both technically and financially) first thinnings in those clusters. The simulations will be based on stand characteristics of the clusters. The future stand development is also included in the simulations. The motive for such simulations is two-fold: first, to determine both technically and financially the feasible first thinnings (entrepreneurs and forest companies), and to estimate the effect of feasible first thinnings on later tree growth during rotation (private forest owners). Both motives provide new information on the postponed first thinnings in Northern Finland.

The main results (locations of the clusters and their raw wood potential and feasible measures to conduct postponed first thinnings) are introduced in briefings for forest owners and forest companies - i.e. to supply and demand side, respectively. By finding out the clusters of postponed first thinnings, and further to combine individual logging areas (owned by several owners), the economies of scale are assumed to be achieved, both for the forest-owners and wood buying companies.
