Resilient reindeer production is the key to maintaining a local food security in northern Fennoscandia and of great importance for the Sámi people; for their livelihoods while being a significant part of their cultural identity and history. Reindeer meat production is also important from a preparedness perspective in times of crises and even war. In addition, reindeer grazing provides an important ecosystem service by controlling shrub encroachment and is necessary in order to preserve the biodiversity of the landscape.
The Nordic research network TARANDUS, established in 2020, aimed to create a sustainable interdisciplinary platform. This platform served to highlight ongoing research, investigate disease outbreaks, foster new collaborations, and provide a forum for discussions, networking, and planning of projects focused on the health and welfare of reindeer. The network also created opportunities for PhD students to gain interest, increase their knowledge within the research area, and present their research at different stages of their education. In total, four workshops were organized during 2021-2023.
The TARANDUS 2 project aims to continue and expand the TARANDUS network, to broaden its impact on reindeer health and welfare by knowledge sharing with more target groups and through a variety of communication channels.
