  • According to the 11th National Forest Inventory, Finland has a total of 26.2 million hectares of forestry land. Of this, 20.3 million hectares is forest land. Other areas beside forestry land – agricultural land, constructed land, roads, etc – make up 4.2 million hectares, or approximately 14 per cent of the total land surface area. (In the pictures below NFI2.1 means the situation before cessions of territory and NFI2.2, the situation after the cessions of territory.)
  • The drained peatlands have gone from the recently drained peatlands, which were the dominant type in the 1960s, to transitional peatlands and to drained peatland forests. According to the results of NFI11, the forestry lands incorporate 2.8 million hectares of drained peatland forests, 1.6 million hectares of transitional peatland, and 0.2 million hectares of recently drained peatland. There is a total of 4.7 million hectares of drained peatland.
  • The total volume of growing stock growing on forest land and poorly productive forest land is, according to the most recent inventory, 2.4 billion cubic metres. Of the total volume of growing stock, pine accounts for approximately half and deciduous trees for approximately 20 per cent of the stock. In the total volume of growing stock, forest lands account for a total of 2.3 billion cubic metres, of which 53 per cent includes trees that exceed 20 cm in their diameter at breast height (DBH).
  • The annual increment of growing stock on forest land and poorly productive forest land in the entire country totals 105.5 million cubic metres according to the most recent inventory. The current increment pace is almost double in comparison to that of the 1970s. Of the total annual increment, the proportion of pine is 46 per cent, with deciduous trees accounting for 23 per cent. The mean annual increment per hectare totals 4.6 cubic metres.
  • The estimate of the maximum sustainable stem wood felling potential on forest lands used for wood production is 81 million cubic metres annually for 2011–2020. Of this, the share in Southern Finland is 61 million cubic metres whereas the share in Northern Finland accounts for 20 million cubic metres.
