Published 28.11.2025

In 2024, Finnish people consumed nearly four kilos of domestic fish and slightly over eight kilos of imported fish per person. Compared to previous year, consumption of domestic fish decreased while consumption on imported fish increased. The consumption of domestic fish has been converted into fillets while the consumption of imported fish has primarily been calculated on the basis of the product weight.

  • The most important domestic species in terms of consumption was farmed rainbow trout (1.6 kilos per person), while of imported fish, farmed salmon was consumed the most (2.6 kilos per person).
  • Of wild-caught domestic fish, perch was consumed the most (0.50 kilos per person). It was followed by pike (0.45 kilos), pikeperch (0.41 kilos), vendace (0.23 kilos), European whitefish (0.17 kilos), and Baltic herring (0.13 kilos).
  • Regarding the consumption of imported fish products, farmed Norwegian salmon was followed by canned tuna and other tuna products and shrimps and shrimp products.
