The Urban Biodiversity Parks as co-creative platforms for enhancing biodiversity, learning and community involvement in urban ecological regeneration (Urban Biodiversity Parks) project will establish the first biodiversity park in Europe in the Skanssi area of Turku, and the model will also be spread to other areas.

The Urban Biodiversity Parks project develops and pilots activities such as:

Various nature management methods and participatory nature management

Experiential learning environment and materials for different target groups

Tools to support resident inclusion, residential renewal, and community engagement

Competences and capabilities of companies (e.g. construction companies, consultants, group companies) to take biodiversity into account in their operations

Ecological compensation model for biodiversity parks

Increasing diversity in the planning of housing companies' yard areas

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) will examine the preconditions for voluntary ecological compensation as part of the development activities of the Biodiversity Park. The work is based on dialogue and cooperation with the construction industry and the City of Turku. LUKE is responsible of this task. The City of Turku and other partners support operations and stakeholder involvement.
