Profitability of fishery 2023

  • In 2023, a total of 1,720 companies operated in the fishery industry. Among them, 75% were fishing companies, with the majority engaged in small-scale fishing practices.
  • The fishery industry provided 1,925 annual work units of employment. Fish processing was the largest sector, covering some 43% of the entire industry. Wholesale and retail accounted for roughly 31% combined, and primary production approximately 26%. Employment increased in retail, while it decreased in all other sectors.
  • In 2023, the total revenue for fisheries enterprises amounted to €914 million. Fish processing produced the highest revenue at roughly EUR 410 million, followed by wholesale with total revenue of EUR 299 million. Fish retail trade produced the total revenue of almost EUR 64 million, aquaculture EUR 90 million and commercial fishery EUR 51 million.
  • The processing value produced by the fishery industry amounted to EUR 152 million. The largest sector in terms of processing value was fish processing with approximately EUR 53 million. Wholesale produced the second largest processing value at around EUR 30 million. The processing value of commercial marine fishery was nearly EUR 21 million and that of commercial inland fishery was nearly EUR 5 million.
  • The net result of commercial marine fishery was EUR 4.6 million and that of commercial inland fishery was EUR 0.9 million. Aquaculture companies recorded a net result of EUR 5 million.
  • Wholesale net profit amounted to EUR 6.1 million and retail net profit was EUR 2 million. The net result for fish processing was a loss of EUR 3.7 million.
