Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products by country 2024
The final export figures for the forest industry's international trade did not change significantly from the preliminary figures published in April. There were some changes in import volumes and values. The import value of paper increased by 5%, mainly due to an increase in imports of fine paper. Imports of firewood were lower than expected, with the import value of firewood declining by around 12%. Relative changes in other categories of goods were small.
Forest Industry Exports
- Exports of forest industry products amounted to just under EUR 12.0 billion and were nearly 1% higher in real terms than the previous year (deflated using the wholesale price index, 1949=100). The forest industry's share of Finland's total goods exports was approximately 17%.
- 60% of export revenues from forest industry products came from Europe and 21% from Asia. The main export destinations remained the same: Germany accounted for 11%, China 10%, and the United States 9%.
- Export revenues from the wood products industry exceeded EUR 3.0 billion, 2% more in real terms than the previous year.
- A total of 8.2 million cubic metres of sawn timber were exported globally. The export value of sawn timber rose to nearly EUR 2 billion, which was 7% more than the previous year and accounted for 16% of forest industry export revenues. Most sawn timber was exported to Egypt.
- Export revenues from the pulp and paper industry remained unchanged from 2023. A total of 4.1 million tonnes of pulp were exported, 9% less than the previous year. The export value of pulp fell to EUR 2.6 billion (-5%). Over 2.7 million tonnes of paper were exported (+4%), but the export value of paper declined slightly (-1%).
- Paperboard was still the largest product group in terms of export value at EUR 3.3 billion (+5%). A total of 3.6 million tonnes of paperboard were exported (+9%). Most paperboard was exported to Germany and the United States.
Imports of Forest Industry Products and Wood
- A total of 5.5 million cubic metres of wood were imported to Finland (+10%). Of the imported wood, 58% was pulpwood, 30% wood chips, and 2% logs. The remaining 10% consisted of firewood and by-product wood. The value of imported wood was just over EUR 0.4 billion (+9%).
- The import volume of sawn timber increased by 11%, but the import value declined slightly to EUR 37 million (-1%). Europe accounted for 80% of the import value.
- Sweden became the most significant trading partner for the forest industry based on import value (EUR 0.29 billion). The second largest import country was Estonia (EUR 0.23 billion). Imports from Estonia decreased by nearly 18%.
- Most roundwood was imported from Latvia and sawn timber from Estonia.
