Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products by country 2023 (provisional)

The value of forest industry exports in 2023 was €12.0 billion, 16% of Finland's total goods exports. The value of imports of forest industry products was €1.6 billion, which was 2% of the value of all imports. The main trading partners for exports were Germany and China, and for imports Estonia and Sweden.

Forest industry exports

  • Exports of forest industry products stayed at €12.0 billion, 16% lower in real terms than in the previous year (deflation: wholesale price index, 1949=100). The forest industry accounted for 16% of the total value of Finland's merchandise exports.
  • 60% of the forest industry's export earnings came from Europe and 22% from Asia. The most important export destinations were Germany (12%), China (12%) and the United States (8%).
  • In the wood products industry, export earnings amounted to €3.0 billion, one quarter less in real terms than in the previous year. Global exports of sawnwood amounted to 8.4 million cubic metres, of which 48% went to Europe. The value of sawnwood exports was €1.8 billion and declined by 27% compared to the previous year. European sawnwood exports experienced a 23% decrease.
  • In the pulp and paper industry, export earnings fell by 13% from the previous year to €9.0 billion. Pulp exports amounted to 4.5 million tonnes, of which 4.0 million tonnes were bleached sulphate pulp. This was one tenth more than last year. The value of exported pulp fell by 4% from last year to €2.7 billion. Paper exports amounted to 2.7 million tonnes (-10%). The value of paper exports fell by 13% from the previous year to €2.7 billion.
  • Among product groups, paperboard produced the highest export value, although its real value fell by 20% from the previous year. Exports of paperboard amounted to 3.3 million tonnes (-20%). The value of exports fell by 20% to €3.2 billion.

Imports of forest industry products and wood

  • The volume of wood imported into Finland was 5.0 million cubic metres, which was 13% less than in the previous year. Of the wood imported, pulpwood accounted for 56%, woodchips for 28%, and logs for 2%. The remaining 14% consisted of imports of firewood and by-product wood.
  • The quantity of sawn timber imports decreased by 68%, totaling €37.6 million. Of this, 79% originated from the European Union.
  • Estonia (€0.43 billion) and Sweden (€0.38 billion) were the primary trading partners of the forest industry in terms of import value. Most roundwood was imported from Estonia and most sawn timber from Sweden.
