Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products by country 2020

  • In 2020 forest industry products covered 18% of Finland’s goods exports value. The value of exported forest industry products totalled EUR 10.36 billion and decreased in real terms by 14% compared to previous year (deflated using wholesale price index).
  • Most of forest industry’s export earnings came from Europe (62%). The share of Asia was 22% and North America 7%.
  • Both paper and paperboard had the share of 27% of forest industry total exports value. Pulp had 18% share while converted paper and paperboard products remained at 4%. Exports value for paper decreased from previous year by 28% and for paperboard there was no change. The exports value for pulp decreased by 18% and converted paper and paperboard products decreased by 5%.
  • Other coated paperboard (multi-ply paperboard coated with kaolin and paperboard coated with plastic) was the most important export product in forest industries, accounting for 17% of the value of forest industry exports. Bleached sulphate pulp was second with 16% share and sawn goods third with 15% share.
  • The most important export countries were Germany, China and United Kingdom. Of total earnings from forest industry products exports, 14% came from Germany, a tenth from China, and 7% from the United Kingdom.
  • In 2020, Finland imported 12.64 million cubic metres of wood, up by 7% from the previous year. Pulpwood accounted for more than half of all imported wood. Chips accounted for 35% and logs 4%. Chips imports increased by 11% from the previous year, while pulpwood imports remained unchanged.
