Foreign trade in fish 2024 (preliminary)

The value of fish and fish products imported to Finland for consumption in 2024 was approximately EUR 560 million, of which EUR 178 million was fresh whole salmon transported to the rest of Europe. The value of products imported for consumption, excluding salmon transport, was EUR 389 million. The value of products imported for non-food purposes totalled EUR 8 million.

The most important imports were fresh whole salmon, prepared and preserved fish and fresh salmon and trout fillets.

The value of products exported for purposes other than human consumption totalled EUR 16 million. Imports of fish products for human consumption amounted to 87 million kilograms, an increase of about 3 million kilograms compared to the previous year.

  • The main importing countries of fish and fish products were Norway (EUR 353 million), Sweden (EUR 56 million) and Denmark (EUR 17 million).
  • Norway accounted for 58% of total imports (51 million kg). The most imported product was fresh whole Atlantic salmon for human consumption (43 million kg), of which 27 million kg were exported as such. Other imported products were fresh fillets and shrimps.
  • Just under 10 million kilograms of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden and just under 4 million kilograms from Germany.
  • The main exporting countries for fresh whole salmon were the Netherlands (EUR 36 million), France (EUR 32 million), Poland (EUR 26 million) and Lithuania (EUR 24 million).
  • Estonia accounted for the largest share of exports of other products (€37 million).
