Access to biogas plant - Jokioinen

Research Infrastructures
Extensive research opportunities: nutrient and carbon cycling, profitability and resource efficiency, emission control, biogas process optimization, recovery of value-added products, and energy solutions.
Utilization of manure and plant-based biomass for the production of biogas, fertilizers, and bedding materials.
Data generation for balance, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), and emission calculations.

The biogas plant is integrated with a research barn, supplying its electricity and heat, and producing bedding material from slurry or digestate.

The facility allows testing of various plant-based biomass either alone or as co-substrates with dairy cattle slurry. Selected inputs and loading rates can be used to measure gas production and quality, energy and mass balances, and to analyze digestate properties and microbial populations.

Fertilizers, bedding, and substrates can be produced from digestate or raw slurry using a screw press separator (feed rate 20 m³/h) and a decanter centrifuge (3 m³/h). Nutrient contents of inputs and separation fractions can be analyzed, and energy consumption and mass balance of the separation process can be measured.

Further processing of slurry, digestate, and their separation fractions can be carried out at laboratory scale in the Biopaja.

It is also possible to bring in external or third-party equipment for testing, such as gas and digestate processing or emission measurements.

The facility can provide data for LCA, mass balance, energy balance, profitability, and emission calculations.

Sample collection

Sampling of inputs, gas, and digestate.

Target groups

Researchers, research groups, research communities, research networks, research projects, research organizations, companies.

Access type

  • Physical, remote or hybrid access.
  • It is possible to reserve the biogas reactor, gas utilization equipment, gas purification equipment, separators, or other individual devices either together or separately.
  • Minimum reservation duration: 1 week.

Service usage restrictions

  • Inputs of animal origin from outside Luke’s research facilities, or other inputs that pose animal disease risks or hinder bedding production, cannot be used for the biogas plant.
  • Separation and other equipment brought in for digestate processing from outside Luke’s research facilities must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. These must be approved by Luke’s veterinarian and the RI Principal Investigator before being brought to the biogas plant.
  • Use of chemicals must be agreed upon separately.

Information to support the application

  • Describe the equipment/systems needed for the experiments, experiment duration, samples, sampling intervals and analyses, as well as measurement and data collection needs.
  • Describe the desired feedstocks for the biogas plant, loading rate, and experiment duration (e.g. several weeks or hydraulic retention time).
  • For separation experiments, describe the number of runs (repeats), additives to be added to slurry or digestate, any chemicals possibly used in separation, as well as equipment settings or desired properties of the separation fractions.
  • Bringing external equipment, biomaterials, and chemicals to the biogas plant: must be approved by the RI Principal Investigator before delivery.
