Cereals purchased, used and stockpiled, Q4 2023 and year 2023

Published 13.2.2024

In 2023, just over 1.6 billion kilos of cereals will have left farms, of which the organic share will be less than 3%. Domestic industry used just under 1.3 billion kilograms of cereals for food milling, feed and other products.

In addition to cereals, oil and protein crops, including 37 million kilos of rapeseed and oilseed rape and around 49 million kilos of peas, left the farm market. Purchases of peas were exceptionally large, up almost 80% on the previous year. However, the strongest growth was in broad beans, where purchases more than doubled.

Cereal stocks in 2023 as a whole were around 12% lower than a year earlier, and 19% lower for organic crops. Only oats and rye stocks remained relatively unchanged. Barley stocks showed the largest reduction, of around 30%. Stocks of rape and colza more than doubled, while those of peas swelled by 40%.
