Use of Crops on Farms 2021–2022 (provisional) and 2020-2021 (final statistics)

Published 16.9.2022

As a result of the low cereal harvest in 2021, farms started to use cereal-based feed more diligently and stocks decreased. Of the cereal harvest of 2.6 million tons, farms sold 1.6 million tons. The million tons remaining on farms was insufficient to cover the period until the next harvest season – stocks fell to a historical low. The cereal balance sheet examination over the period of 1 July 2021 – 30 June 2022 will be specified as final in a year from now.

  • The 2021 cereal harvest totalled 2.6 million tons.
  • More than half of the cereal harvest was sold to the market during the crop year, with oats having the highest volume of more than 575,000 tons.
  • Most of the cereals remaining at farms, i.e. 1.1 million tons, was used as feed, with barley having the highest volume of approximately 640,000 tons.
  • Some 290,000 tons of cereals were used for sowing during autumn 2021 and spring 2022.
  • Cereal stocks on farms are estimated to be historically low at the end of the 2021–2022 harvest year at less than 400,000 tons.

Use statistics of the harvest at farms over the crop year 1 July 2021 – 30 June 2022 are estimates and will be specified in September 2023.
