In 2022, farms produced a cereal harvest of roughly 3.6 million tons. Of this volume, farms sold 1.6 million tons during the year. Some 1.3 million tons of cereals were used on farms directly as feed and for the next year’s crop sowing. In the autumn of 2022, farms had low cereal stocks as a result of the extensive use of the previous year’s small harvest. In the autumn of 2023, cereal stocks on farms returned to the normal level before harvesting.

  • The 2022 cereal harvest totalled 3.6 million tons.
  • Almost half of the cereal harvest was sold to the market during the crop year, with oats having the highest volume of approximately 640,000 tons.
  • Most of the cereals remaining at farms, i.e. 1 million tons, was used as feed, with barley having the highest volume of approximately 630,000 tons.
  • Some 270,000 tons of cereals were used for sowing during autumn 2022 and spring 2023.
  • Farm grain stocks were historically low at the beginning of the harvest year (July 1, 2022) — less than 400,000 tons, but returned to average levels at the end of the harvest year, i.e., on June 30, 2023, grain stocks were estimated at 900,000 tons.

Use statistics of the harvest at farms over the crop year 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023 are estimates and will be specified in September 2024.
